Can Semi-Permanent Eyelash Extensions Get Wet?

Are you planning on getting eyelash extensions or do you already wear them and possibly planning a vacation? One thing we all want to know is what happens if we get eyelash extensions wet. Will they fall off if you go swimming in the pool or the sea?

Can Semi-Permanent Eyelash Extensions Get Wet? Semi-permanent eyelash extensions CAN get wet.

Aftercare is always given for any kind of treatment I do and in this article, we will explore the do’s and don’t’s for keeping your eyelash extensions looking incredible, even when getting wet.

Will Chlorine Affect My Eyelash Extensions?

Chlorinated swimming pools can affect your eyelash extensions. To help minimize the risk of this, it is so important is to ALWAYS rinse your eyelash extensions immediately with fresh water after swimming in any chlorinated water, the sea, or lakes.

If you are planning on going on vacation or even to the local swimming pool, always remember to pack some goggles. You may not usually wear them for swimming but, trust me, wearing these will prolong the life of your eyelash extensions and stop the chlorine from breaking down the bond.

When wearing swimming goggles to help protect your eyelashes from chlorine, it is important to ensure you are wearing the correct size. They must be comfortable and your lashes should not be touching the lens.

Good tip – if you are going to be spending a lot of time in chlorinated water with your eyelash extensions then you might want to consider then length of extensions you will have applied. The longer the extension the more risk of them shedding quicker.

Personally, anytime I have been swimming with my eyelash extensions on, I try and be as careful as I can – although this can be hard with a 4 & 7-year-old jumping and splashing 🙂

Just be mindful, that, when in chlorinated water with eyelash extensions you are at risk of your lashes shedding quicker than normal so if you stick to wearing goggles, rinsing them immediately after with fresh water and pat drying then there is a really good chance that they will have a longer life-span and go the same amount of time between your eyelash extensions top-up appointments.

Does Salt Water Ruin My Eyelash Extenions?

If you have eyelash extensions on and you’re thinking of heading to the beach and salty waters, please remember to give your lashes at least 24-48 hours after they have been applied to dry completely. Do not go to the beach on the same day as your eyelash extensions are applied!

Some salons may use a nanomister after applying eyelash extensions, so ask your lash technician about this. I have written a really interesting article about this, you can find it here.

A build-up of salt on your lashes, through time, will certainly affect the retention of your eyelash extensions – meaning that if you are in the ocean on a daily basis – with your head fully submerged, then your eyelash extensions may not last as long as they normally would.

Rinse, rinse, rinse. A build-up of saltwater will 100% affect your eyelash extensions so anytime you come out of the water, rinse with fresh water, and remember to pat dry. Do not rub your eyes with a towel.

Staying above the water and wearing goggles will definitely prolong your eyelash extension life after being in salt water. Remember to always use a clean lash brush and brush after swimming.

Can I Go In The Sauna with My Eyelash Extensions?

You can go to a sauna with eyelash extensions, just not on the same day your eyelash extensions are applied! Always remember, you need to keep your eyelashes dry for up to 24 hours after the initial application (your eyelash technician will explain all the homecare and aftercare at your appointment).

Although you can access the sauna freely, the more use of this may affect the retention of your eyelashe extensions. The humidity over time will cause the adhesive to melt, resulting in your lovely eyelash extensions to shed off.

I once went into a sauna approximately 4 days after having my eyelash extensions applied. Of course, it was lovely to relax but on leaving the sauna and having a shower, I noticed some of my eyelash extensions coming off. There were only a few, but the days after, my eyelash extensions were shedding a lot more than normal. So much, that I had to book a top-up appointment 5 days sooner than normal!!

Just keep this in mind when planning a spa day with the girls! Perhaps you could plan your trip to the sauna just before you are due a top-up? Then this way you know your lash technician will be able to fill any gaps where your eyelash extensions have shed.

How To Dry Wet Eyelash Extensions

Ok, so the first thing that may come to your mind when your eyelash extensions are wet and you want to dry them, is, lets get the hairdryer out.

Please, if you are thinking this, then do not do this!! If you put a hairdryer close to your eyelash extensions to dry them, the following will most likely happen. And trust me, it will not be a good look;

  1. You could burn your eyelid or the area surrounding your eye – the temperature of a hair dryer is very hot and even at its lowest level could still cause damage.
  2. The eyelash extensions will burn or singe. Leaving you with uneven, warped looking eyelashes.

The easiest way to dry your eyelash extensions is to pat dry with a towel and use a clean mascara brush to comb through the eyelash extensions. Depending how full they may be will determine how long it will take to dry. If you feel you would like them dried quicker and dont’t want to hang around then you can use a handheld fan on a cool setting.

I’ve used this Handheld Mini Rechargeable Eyelash Fan and it is fantastic. It can fit in your purse too! Check out the latest price here.Opens in a new tab.
