Here you can find answers to your most asked questions. I have recently written another similar article bit for everything you need to know for after your dermaplaning treatment. You can check this out here.

What Should I Avoid Before Dermaplaning?

As a general rule, you should stop exfoliating a few days prior to your dermaplaning treatment. The skin should not be sensitized before the treatment so your best to stop all exfoliation treatments at least 3 days prior to the scheduled dermaplaning appointment.

You might want to consider staying out of the direct sunlight for a few days prior to your treatment as well then this way there is no chance of your skin being sunburnt or sensitive from the sun as the treatment would not go ahead. I mean let’s face it, you wouldn’t want to shave over sunburn, would you?

If you normally have anti-wrinkle treatments, fillers, or other aesthetic treatments or you are thinking of planning some then plan wisely. Ensure you leave at least a week between treatments or even better, have your dermaplaning done first. Speak to your local aesthetic clinic for more information regarding this.

If you normally have a tidy up around the top lip or chin area with wax then hold off at least a week after this to have your dermaplaning done. This will help avoid over-sensitivity to those particular areas.

Should You Exfoliate Before Dermaplaning?

As a general rule, you should not exfoliate before dermaplaning. Stop using any exfoliation products on your skin at least 5-7 days prior to your dermaplaning treatment these include exfoliants that contain AHAs, BHAs, enzymes, microbeads, and retinoids as these products are more than likely to thin your skin.

If you do not stop exfoliating before a dermaplaning treatment you are putting yourself at very high risk of you having a reaction. There would be a high risk of over-sensitizing the area and also razor marks if the skin is too sensitive. This would not be a good look and could be very uncomfortable so your best to stop all exfoliation out for about a week before.

What Should I Put On My Face Before Dermaplaning?

Generally, when you go for a dermaplaning treatment it would be best to have nothing on your skin but this is not a major deal as you will have a deep cleanse before your treatment starts. Your skin needs to be free of any make-up or products.

The therapist who is carrying out your dermaplaning treatment will start off the treatment by double cleansing your skin. The skin is then toned and wiped over again with a medical pre-injection swab. This ensures there is no bacteria lying on the skin and provides a clear base to carry out the dermaplaning treatment.

Once the treatment is complete (depending how luxury the treatment is you have chose) your skin will be toned again then normally a hyaluronic serum or something similar is applied then locked in with a nourishing moisturizer.

Should I Put Moisturizer on Before Dermaplaning?

If you have booked into a salon to have your dermaplaning done, whoever is carrying out your treatment will fully prep your face before your treatment so it won’t matter if you have moisturizer on or not as anything that is on the skin will be removed completely.

Before a dermaplaning procedure starts all makeup and products are removed from the face and then a barrier oil or serum is applied to ensure the gliding of the dermaplaning blade is comfortable and for protection.

I have clients of my own that tend to turn up from work so they will have some sort of make-up on their face. I prefer them not to as it cuts down my treatment time but I will always carry out a double cleanse before I start so either way, is fine for me.

How Should I Prepare My Skin For Dermaplaning?

Here is a list of steps you should take to prepare your skin for dermaplaning:

  • As a general rule, you should stop using any exfoliants 5 to 7 days prior to your dermaplaning treatment. This includes exfoliants that contain AHAs, BHAs, enzymes, microbeads, and retinoids as these products are more than likely to thin your skin.
  • Keep out of direct sun exposure for at least 5-7 days prior to your dermaplaning treatment. If there is any song of sunburn or sensitivity then the treatment will not be carried out.
  • Schedule all facial waxing for a week before your treatment or 2 weeks after your dermaplaning.
  • Avoid have anti-wrinkle procedures or fillers before your dermaplaning appointment.
  • Turn up to your appointment with no makeup on your skin.

By following these easy steps for before your scheduled dermaplaning, you should get the best out of your dermaplaning treatment.

Can I Wax Before Dermaplaning?

Waxing before dermaplaning is not ideal as your skin may be sensitive so I would always recommend you get your facial waxing done at least a week before dermaplaning or 2 weeks after. This allows your skin time to heal and all the sensitivity to be gone.

Waxing should not be done immediately before dermaplaning. If this was done there would be a high risk of over-sensitizing the area resulting in the area being sore and a possible reaction taking place.

Plan out your waxing appointments if you are thinking of having dermaplaning done and schedule them in line with these guidelines. A dermaplaning technician would not carry out the treatment of waxing had just been done so schedule your appointments carefully and enjoy the full experience.
