Dermaplaning: Pros & Cons (Before & After Pictures)

Dermaplaning is a well-known type of facial worldwide which everyone seems to be talking about. You have probably heard a friend or even someone in a store comment about “how smooth their skin was after their treatment” or “how brilliant their make-up went on after”. But is dermaplaning really worth it and what exactly can you get from a dermaplaning treatment?

Here in this article I will explain the pros and cons of dermaplaning and explain in detail the benefits. Dermaplaning is not for everyone, but after you have read this, you should make your mind up for yourself.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a superficial, cosmetic procedure performed using a 10-gauge sterile surgical scalpel with gentle strokes. This is held at a 45-degree angle (keeping the skin taught) to remove dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair, also known as “peach fuzz”. Dermaplaning removes dead skin through a portion of the epidermal layer. This luxury facial takes between 30 to 60 minutes and is painless.

What Happens During A Dermaplaning Treatment?

Dermaplaning is a very relaxing treatment. I know that sounds nuts right? How can a scalpel moving across your skin send you off to sleep? Well truthfully, because the blade is positioned very precisely at a 45 degree angle and the movements are so slow, you would never know what was going on.

Here are the steps in detail of how a full dermaplaning treatment should be carried out by a professionally trained aesthetician:

  1. Skin prep – skin is double cleansed to remove all make-up and any dirt/debris. Skin will then be wiped over fully with a medical wipe to remove any bacteria and other germs from your skin’s surface
  2. Balm or protective oil will then be applied all over the skin and neck area to provide a protective layer and to ensure the blade glides smoothly across the skin
  3. Skin will be visually checked and any areas that have not been treated will be done so to ensure no parts are left unattended to
  4. The treatment tends to start from your forehead and work down including your cheeks, chin and neck but excluding your nose lips and eyebrows
  5. Once completed, serum and moisturizer will be applied to help relieve any redness or sensitivity in areas and keep the skin hydrated.

What Are The Benefits of Dermaplaning?

There are many benefits of dermaplaning which include:

  • Instant results with little to no downtime
  • Exfoliates 10 to 15 more times than normal exfoliation
  • Can be combined with other treatments such as chemical peels or LED light therapy
  • Promotes smoother skin
  • Reduces the appearance of fine line and wrinkles and acne scarring
  • Works on most skin types
  • Safe procedure for removing fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) & dead skin cells
  • Allows deeper product penetration
  • Some people experience no sensitivity at all after treatment

What Are The Cons of Dermaplaning?

Although a dermaplaning treatment is pretty superficial with little downtime there are some things that people may feel is a bit of a con. Here I have listed the cons of dermaplaning below:

  • The skin may go red or pink immediately after treatment and feel quite sensitive
  • Dermaplaning will typically be more expensive than other methods of hair removal
  • Not everyone will be suitable for this treatment
  • Results of dermaplaning are not permanent. You can expect your results to last at least 4 weeks depending on your skin type and hair growth
  • The results from dermaplaning may differ for each person. These will depend on skin type, age, hair growth, and so on.
  • SPF must be worn daily for the first 36 hours to avoid skin sensitization from the direct sunlight.

Is Shaving Your Face The Same As Dermaplaning?

Using an open blade such as a razor on the face area will remove the fine vellus hair, also known as peach fuzz as will dermaplaning but you won’t get the other benefits from shaving your face that dermaplaning can offer. Dermaplaning is a deep exfoliation treatment whereas shaving is not. Dermaplaning has many amazing benefits that shaving cannot offer.
